J&K CM appoints 117 lecturers, waives fees for AAY students
New batch of lecturers joins the education system
The government of Jammu & Kashmir took a significant step by reviving appointments to school lecturer posts after many years. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah presented appointment letters to 117 newly selected lecturers during a formal ceremony. Full tuition fee waiver for AAY families
In a move aimed at making education more affordable, the Chief Minister announced a complete tuition fee waiver for students belonging to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) families. The decision fulfills a promise made in the Budget 2026 and targets both school and college levels. By removing financial barriers, the government hopes to increase enrollment and retention rates among the most economically vulnerable households.
The waiver covers all tuition charges, allowing AAY students to access classroom learning without any monetary burden. This policy is expected to have a ripple effect, encouraging families to prioritize education and invest in skill development for their children.
Major infrastructure projects unveiled
During the Education Conclave 2026, titled ‘Buniyaad Se Bulandi Tak’, the Chief Minister inaugurated 2,109 works in the education sector. The total investment exceeds 115 crore rupees, covering a wide range of improvements such as classroom upgrades, laboratory facilities, and digital infrastructure. These projects are designed to modernize learning environments and provide students with better resources.
Among the new facilities, a studio for virtual classes and a high‑tech auditorium at the Government College of Engineering Technology Jammu were launched. The virtual class studio will enable remote learning, while the auditorium offers a platform for seminars, conferences, and cultural events. Both initiatives aim to enhance the quality of higher education and technical training in the region.
Honoring academic excellence and innovation
The event also recognized the achievements of 67 meritorious school and college students who demonstrated exceptional academic performance. Their results highlight the impact of dedicated teaching and supportive policies. In addition, National Award‑winning teachers were felicitated for their contributions to education.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister visited exhibition stalls showcasing student innovations, institutional reforms, and technology‑driven initiatives. Projects ranged from patented inventions to start‑up concepts, illustrating how young minds are applying classroom knowledge to solve everyday problems. The Chief Minister praised these efforts, noting that they reflect the potential of a well‑educated populace to drive societal progress.
Education Minister Sakina Itoo was also commended for initiating several reforms and budgetary measures that have paved the way for these developments. Her leadership in shaping policy and allocating funds has been instrumental in delivering tangible benefits to students and teachers alike.
